Yesterday the TSA responded to concerns about the specialty bottles being banned from flights. They said they would review the situation and today they concluded the review.
According to the statement from the TSA, the bottles will be treated like any other bottled liquid. If you keep the soda in the bottles it need to go in your checked bags. If you empty the bottles they can go in your carry-on. So the same rules that apply to other bottles with liquids applies to these soda bottles.
Here is the official statement from the TSA and here is the link for the statement on the TSA’s website.
“The issue concerning Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge-themed soda bottles has recently been brought to our attention by the general public, as these items could reasonably be seen by some as replica hand grenades. We appreciate the concerns being raised, because replica explosives are not permitted in either carry-on or checked bags. We have completed our review, and instructed our officers to treat these as an oversized liquid. Because these bottles contain liquids larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), they should be put in checked baggage or emptied to be brought on as carry-on item. TSA officers will maintain the discretion to prohibit any item through the screening checkpoint if they believe it poses a security threat.”
So the bottles were never actually banned by the TSA. The original tweet created some confusion and the reports of them being banned started from there. It’s nice that the TSA responded so quickly to this, because now people know they are allowed to bring them on the plane and don’t have to pay to have them shipped home.
Are you planning to get some of these bottles as souvenirs?
