There were so many new things announced this past weekend at D23. This announcement has people both excited and sad at the same time.
Disney announced that they will be closing The Great Movie Ride on August 13, 2017 to make way for a new ride-through attraction starring Mickey and friends. The new attraction will be called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway and it will be their first Mickey-themed ride-through attraction.
The idea of the ride is based off the Mickey Shorts from the Disney Channel. Disney wants guests to be able to “step through the movie screen” and join Mickey friends. Basically, guests will be a part of the show, which Disney describes to a “zany out-of-control adventure.” They are calling this new ride a 2 1/2 D ride, which means 3D glasses are not necessary.
According to Disney, Kevin Rafferty (a Walt Disney Imagineer) described the new ride as a “dimensional display of amazingness.” That sound like a lot to live up to, but it also sounds pretty amazing!

I am so excited for the new ride. This sounds like something my son will enjoy. He loves Mickey Mouse Playhouse and all those characters
I am always happy when Disney comes out with a new ride because the imagineers make excellent rides however I am very sad to see The Great Movie Ride close its doors I think it’s one the most creative an Innovative ride that Disney has created in a park which is tile Hollywood Studios which is all about movies I hope that other rides will focus on Hollywood films Hollywood movies like the theme of the park Hollywood Studios
This December will be my first trip to Disney. I am disappointed to hear the Great Movie Ride is closing. My husband and I were looking forward to it. Sounds like it’s being replaced with a more younger crowd attraction.
So disappointed that they are replacing the Great Movie Ride. That was one of our favorite rides there. They should replace something else.
I am sure the new attraction will be great, but I was really looking forward to enjoying the great movie ride this coming January when we make a trip to Disney that has been 2 years in the planning.
Loved the great movie ride it will be missed
I have been to disneyworld many times and will be returning there this December. I am so very sad their will be no great movie ride. I know the new attraction will not be opening when I arrive , so I know that there will be one less ride to enjoy at the park.
My husband and I are disappointed that The Great Movie Ride will be gone. We have been fortunate to have been on that ride many times. The future generations will have to miss a great ride, but the new ride sounds very exciting too so looking forward to seeing it soon.
Just never take away It’s A Small World and Carasoul of Progress ride. They are some of Walts pride and joy, and should not be replaced.
