Disney’s Fort Wilderness is pretty big and spread out. It is set on 750 acres and has both cabins and the campgrounds. The cabins can have up to six people in them, so they are a good option for bigger travel parties.
Recently, my family had the chance to stay in a cabin and we really enjoyed it. Staying at Fort Wilderness is definitely a different experience than staying at one of Disney’s other hotels, but it was a fun experience for us.
When we arrived at Fort Wilderness we went right to the Fort Wilderness Reception Post to checkin and pick up our golf cart (I highly recommend renting a golf cart to get around during your stay). The Reception Outpost is well themed to the resort, so it was fun to look around while we were there.
After we finished checking in and looking around the Reception Outpost we headed outside to pick up our golf cart. It’s so handy that they have this available as an option for guests. Once we signed the lease and were given the tutorial about the golf cart we brought it to our cabin. It’s really fun driving around in the golf cart! Keep in mind that the golf carts have to follow the same rules as the cars when driving around the property, which means they have to stop for the buses (guests have to cross the street to get to cabins sometimes), stop at stop signs, etc. Also, since the golf carts go so much slower than the cars, the resort asks you to pull over when cars are following behind you.
We loved having the golf cart. When we would return from the parks we would hop on the golf cart and go exploring around the resort. There’s even golf cart parking by the Meadow Trading Post, so we parked our cart and took a look around the store. You can find souvenirs as well as camping supplies at the store.
Now, on to the cabin. We absolutely loved staying in the cabin. It had a good amount of space, so we were able to spread out a bit. The space really helps when you are traveling with multiple people. It especially helps when you are traveling with kids.
When we walked in the cabin we were greeted by a full kitchen with a full size refrigerator. I was excited to have the full size fridge, because I knew that would come in handy while we were there. The kitchen also has a dishwasher, sink, stovetop, microwave, toaster, and coffee pot. In addition, it is fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, cups, and silverware. Preparing meals at the cabin would be very easy with this full kitchen.
To the right of the kitchen is the living area. There is a pullout sofa in this area, in front of the big television. That setup was a big reason why the kids wanted to sleep in that area. Also in the living area is a bench/coffee table, storage space around the television, a table and chair, and a dining area with a bench seat, three chairs, and a table. There is plenty of space for everyone to sit and relax (when the pullout sofa isn’t out). A nice touch to this area is the exposed beams, which helps give it that rustic feel. I also really liked the detail on the light fixtures and the pictures that were on the walls. It all tied into the theme very well.
To the other side of the kitchen is a hallway that leads to the bathroom and the bedroom. The bathroom is a good size, it definitely does not have that cramped feeling that other hotel bathrooms have. The rustic theme continued into the bathroom too. There were exposed beams and the colors in the shower curtain are subdued, which matches the colors on the curtains, though they don’t have the same pattern. The bathroom came stocked with the usual Disney toiletries, a hairdryer, some mosquito repellant wipes, towels, and toilet paper. The tub/shower combination is also a good size and we found the water pressure to be pretty good.
At the end of the hallway is the bedroom with a queen size bed and a bunkbed. Our kids decided to sleep in the living area with the big television, but the bunkbed adds an additional two sleeping areas for people, which is how the cabin fits six people. If people were sleeping in the queen bed and on the bunkbeds the room might feel a bit cramped. It’s a good size, but not huge. In addition to the beds there is a nightstand with an alarm clock, a closet (which has an iron, an ironing board, and the safe), a television, a small dresser on one side of the closet and a shelf with a mirror on the other side of the closet. Also in the bedroom is a second door to get outside, which helps if there are people sleeping in the living area. The doors both have chain locks near the top of the door. The top locks give a little added security.
The cabins also come with a spacious deck that has a picnic bench. There are outlets on the outside of the cabin so you can get electricity outside. Just below the deck is the barbecue. It looks like the same kind of barbecue that you would find in a park, so it’s not fancy, but it works!
While you are sitting on the deck make sure to take a look around, because there is plenty of wildlife wandering around. We saw an armadillo when we first arrived. Even though the wildlife is cute, remember not to get near or feed them. There are signs on the cabin decks warning guests of this.
Each cabin also has a thermostat, so you can control the temperature, a phone, and a rack on the wall to hang things (we used it to hang our backpack and our daughter’s princess dresses.
As I said above, we really enjoyed are stay at the cabin and plan to stay there again at some point. The kids had so much fun and my husband enjoyed staying somewhere that didn’t feel like a hotel. It was pretty nice to have your own space and not share walls with anyone.
There was one thing that I was very unhappy with and actually called Disney about, but unfortunately nothing was done. Since we drove down we got charged for parking. We were fine with paying the parking fee when we switched to Port Orleans – French Quarter, but I had a problem paying for the parking space at the cabin. The reason is because there is a parking space at every cabin. It’s a pad that’s basically attached to the cabin, so I assumed it was included with the price, but I was wrong. I asked what would happen if we did not have a car with us, would the space be given to someone else? I was repeatedly told no, of course not. So if the parking space is attached to the cabin and we are the only ones that can use it when we are there, that would lead me to believe that the parking space is already included in the cost of the cabin. It just seemed a little shady to me to charge someone for something that’s physically part of where you are staying, but I digress.
Other than the parking issue, it was a fantastic stay and I recommend the cabin to clients, family, and friends all the time now. It’s a nice change from doing a hotel stay and everyone had fun riding around on the golf cart.
Have you ever stayed in a cabin at Fort Wilderness?
Thanks for reading!

We love staying at the cabins. We have stayed there many times. I love that you get mousekeeping everyday. We also order food to be delivered from garden grocer. It’s great to have breakfast in. Instead of having to get dressed and go out. And if you are not at the cabin at the time of delivery, Disney will put your cold stuff away in your fridge. Its wonderful.
Plus there is so much to do at the campground. Horseback riding, bike rental, campfire with a movie and so much more.
I love getting up early and going down to the restaurant and grabbing a cup of coffee and sit in the rocking chairs on the porch and wait for the world to wake up
I highly recommend the cabins
Garden Grocer is great! We’ve used them before and it was so nice having a stocked fridge. Their prices seem pretty reasonable too.
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments regarding having to pay a parking fee.
I’m still annoyed over having to pay the fee. Each person I asked about it sounded surprised that I would ask if the space would be given to someone else if we didn’t have a car. I explained that if they are charging for the spot then it’s not included with the cabin so I would assume anyone can park there. It just doesn’t seem right to charge a parking fee for that resort in particular.
We will be staying in a Fort Wilderness cabin in December…can’t wait
It’s such a fun place to stay! Enjoy your trip in December!
