The latest D23 Expo took place in Japan and last night there were quite a few announcements that were made. A lot of these announcements have to do with Hollywood Studios, but no opening date for Toy Story Land was announced.
While the opening date for Toy Story Land was not announced, Disney did reveal when Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is going to open. This is the ride that is going to take the place of the Great Movie Ride, which closed in August 2017. The new ride is the first Mickey-themed ride-through attraction that Disney will have. Disney is creating a new theme song for the ride and they are saying that this ride will be 2 1/2 D, which means guests will not have to wear 3D glasses. I’m very interested to see how that works.
There will be a new short created for this attraction that guests will see first. The story behind the ride is that Mickey and Minnie are heading to a picnic and end up driving next to a train, which has Goofy as the engineer (of course). Guests are then brought into this world and on to Goofy’s train, so you can imagine the crazy ride that is in store.
During the expo Disney announced when Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open. While there isn’t an exact opening date for the ride, they did say it will open in 2019. I’m wondering if it will open before, after, or at the same time as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. We can only wait and see, but this ride sounds like it’s going to be a fun one!
Speaking of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Disney talked a little about the Star Wars-inspired resort. This new resort will give guests complete immersion into the Star Wars story, giving guests the chance to become citizens and wear clothes that are designed to go along with the story. When looking out resort windows guests will not be looking at Florida, but instead will have a view into space. Disney is saying that this resort will be connected to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This sounds like a very cool (albeit expensive) experience!
Over in Epcot, Disney officially announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction is in fact going to be a roller coaster. However, it’s not just going to be a roller coaster, it’s going to be one of the world’s longest enclosed roller coasters! Ellen’s Energy Adventure closed in August 2017 to make way for this new attraction. While Disney didn’t have an opening date for this ride, they said it would be open in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021.
I’ll keep an eye on opening dates for all of these and let you know when they are announced. I’m also keeping a close eye on the opening date for Toy Story Land. Hopefully that will be announced soon.
What do you think of all these additions coming to Disney World?
Thanks for reading!
