Today is a sad day for many people in the Disney World community. One of Disney’s most beloved cast members has passed away.
Richard Gerth started as the greeter at the Grand Floridian in 1991. In an interview with Disney Files Magazine in 2014 he talks about how he got the position as greeter and never had to fill out an application. He also talks about what his new found fame among those in the Disney World community meant to him. It’s a sweet interview with a very special cast member and you can see it here.
It is so sad to hear confirmation of his passing. He was a true gentleman and such a pleasure to talk to. Guests who visit the Grand Floridian, whether they are staying there or just visiting, would make it a point to stop and talk to Richard. Many guests have also had their pictures taken with him. In fact, brides who had weddings at the Grand Floridian would often have their wedding photographer include pictures with Richard on their wedding day.
To say Richard is well liked would be a huge understatement. Many guests have made special trips to the Grand Floridian just to have their picture taken with him. He is a Disney legend in the eyes of so many guests.
Main Street Wishes would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Richard’s family and friends. There is not doubt that he will be missed by many. I am so heartbroken to know that the next time I visit the Grand Floridian Richard will not be there greeting everyone with his smile.
Rest in peace, Richard. Your absence is already felt and you will be missed by so many.
Here is the confirmation from the Richard Gerth – Grand Floridian Greeter Facebook Page.
Please feel free to share pictures and stories about Richard in the comments or in our Facebook groups.

My heart broke when I read this! We just stayed at GF this past Christmas and we were greeted by him daily with all our comings and goings! He was a lovely, warm and friendly man! His smile warmed our hearts each time! We will miss seeing him! May he rest In peace!❤️❌⭕️
I feel the same way, Linda. I’m going to stop by the GF during my next stay, but it’s going to be so sad.
Does anyone know how old he was?
I believe I read that he was 92.
