TSA Responds to Concern Over Flying with Star Wars Coke Bottles

Today there was a lot of talk about the specially designed Coke bottles not being allowed on airplanes. The TSA issued a statement in response to all the talk.

There were some tweets to @AskTSA questioning whether the bottles would be allowed in luggage. The response lead people to believe that they are banned from airlines.

Once people started seeing these questions and responses it was assumed that the bottles would have to be shipped home separately. Due to all the attention this topic received today, the TSA released a statement, which you will find below. Here is the link to the page with the statement, as well.

TSA Statement

“The issue concerning Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge-themed soda bottles has recently been brought to our attention by the general public, as these items could reasonably be seen by some as replica hand grenades. We appreciate the concerns being raised, because replica explosives are not permitted in either carry-on or checked bags. While we continue to review this issue, TSA officers will maintain the discretion to prohibit any item through the screening checkpoint if they believe it poses a security threat.”

While the statement doesn’t fully clear up the question as to whether they are allowed on planes or not, I can say that I was able to bring two empty bottles on the plane. One was the water bottle though, so it didn’t have the same shape as the Coke bottle. My bag was put to the side and a TSA agent did look through the bag. However, it seemed he was more interested in the candy apples I was bringing home than the bottles.

Before I put the Coke bottle in my bag the outside piece (the piece that helps it look more like an explosive device) came off and I threw it in my other carryon. So that might have had something to do with it, but I don’t know for sure. As others have pointed out, if the piece on the top is removed it just looks like a Christmas ornament.

I’m not the only one who has said they had no problem traveling with these. However, I can understand if guests are still wary about bringing them to the airport. If you are nervous about bringing on a plane with you can always have them mailed to your house. Just ask at your hotel and they should be able to help you with mailing the bottles home.
